چکیده

An important research trend in databases is to handle different types of uncertainty at both conceptual and logical levels for various non-traditional applications that may involve imprecision and uncertainty that have been difficult to integrate cohesively in simple database models. In this study we describe how to conceptually model complex and uncertain information at the conceptual level (by utilizing the ExIFO2 model) for Geographic Information System (GIS) applications. We also give the mapping algorithm that transforms the conceptual schema of GIS applications into the logical database structures by utilizing the fuzzy object-oriented database (FOOD) model at the logical level. The types of uncertainty that we mainly focus in this paper are fuzzy, null, and incomplete information related to objects and their properties, classes, and relationships among objects and classes of GIS applications.

Integration of artificial neural network and geographic information system applications in simulating groundwater quality

Background: Although experiments on water quality are time consuming and expensive, models are often employed as supplement to simulate water quality. Artificial neural network (ANN) is an efficient tool in hydrologic studies, yet it cannot predetermine its results in the forms of maps and geo-referenced data. Methods: In this study, ANN was applied to simulate groundwater quality ...

Conceptual Modeling for Federated GIS over the Web

A conceptual model provides the best support for federating heterogeneous datastores into a unified framework and elaborating a global consistent description of all available data. It therefore plays a central role for exchange of information within the coming information society. This paper introduces a conceptual model for applications using spatio-temporal data. We discuss in particular the ...

A UML Profile for Conceptual Modeling in GIS Domain

After many years of research in the field of conceptual modeling of geographic databases, experts have produced different alternatives of conceptual models. However, still today, there is no consensus on which is the most suitable one for modeling applications of geographic data, which brings up a number of problems for field advancement. A UML Profile allows a structured and precise UML extens...

Information Access through Conceptual Structures and GIS

This paper presents a new technique for information access based on a combination of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and conceptual structures as modeled in relational concept analysis. It is based on the idea that traditional relational databases restrict their data types to linearly ordered scales. Since spatial data are not linearly ordered, they cannot be modeled directly in relational...

Preface: semantic and conceptual issues in geographic information systems

Recent advances in information technologies have increased the production, collection, and diffusion of geographical data, thus favoring the design and development of geographic information systems (GIS). Nowadays, GIS are emerging as a common information infrastructure that penetrate into more and more aspects of our society. This has given rise to new methodological and data engineering chall...
